If you want to make soothing, skin-loving herbal salves without beeswax, you're in the right place. Whether you're vegan, allergic to beeswax, or just curious about vegan-friendly beeswax alternatives, there are plenty of ways to create nourishing balms with plant-based ingredients.
As someone who’s always blending herbs into something practical, I’ve been experimenting with vegan waxes for lip and hand salves—and I'm excited to share my favourites.
Why Go Beeswax-Free?
Beeswax is commonly used in salves for its firming and protective qualities. But vegan-friendly alternatives like candelilla wax, carnauba wax, and soy wax work with some tweaking.

Each offers a different texture and melting point, so small test batches are always good.
Vegan Herbal Salves: 3 Recipes to Try
1. Vegan Calendula Lip Balm (with Candelilla Wax)
A soft, soothing balm that’s perfect for everyday lip care.
You’ll need:
2 tbsp calendula-infused olive oil
1 tbsp shea butter
1/2 tbsp candelilla wax
Optional: 2 drops sweet orange essential oil
How to make:
Gently melt everything in a double boiler.
Stir well and pour into lip balm tins or tubes.
Let cool and harden.
2. Mint & Rose Lip Salve (No Beeswax)
Cooling and floral, with just a hint of colour.
You’ll need:
2 tbsp rose-infused coconut oil
1/2 tbsp soy wax
Optional: 1 drop peppermint essential oil
Optional: pinch of beetroot powder
How to make:
Melt oil and wax together over low heat.
Stir in essential oil and tint.
Pour into tins and let set.
3. Winter Hand Balm with Carnauba Wax
Thick and protective—perfect for dry, cracked hands in cold months.
You’ll need:
2 tbsp marshmallow root + plantain-infused almond oil
1 tbsp cocoa butter
1/3 tbsp carnauba wax (a little goes a long way)
How to make:
Melt ingredients together slowly.
Stir well and pour into a clean jar.
Cool before sealing.
Tips for Vegan Salve-Making Success
Test texture: Start with small batches and adjust wax levels for your preferred firmness.
Label and date your creations.
Store in a cool, dark place and use within 6–12 months.
Avoid adding fresh herbs or water-based ingredients—these can shorten shelf life.
