Create beautifully scented, natural room sprays using herbs, flowers and simple ingredients.
If you’ve read our post on The Meaning Behind Cleansing Flowers and Herbs, you’ll know I have a thing for botanicals. Whether drying herbs from the garden, foraging in hedgerows, or playing with essential oil blends, I always look for slow, natural ways to bring fragrance into the home.

These DIY room sprays—or fragrance mists—are one of my favourite ways to do just that. They’re quick to make, easy to customise, and let you scent your space without the need for synthetic perfumes or aerosols. Think fresh laundry, calm evenings, wild meadows... bottled.
What You’ll Need to Make a Natural Room Mist
You only need a few ingredients, most of which you might already have:
A small glass spray bottle (amber or clear – 50 to 100ml is perfect)
Distilled or cooled boiled water
Witch hazel, vodka or rubbing alcohol (this helps the oils disperse)
Your favourite essential oils
Optional: a few dried herbs or flowers, labels, and ribbon if giving as gifts
Step-by-Step Instructions
Fill your spray bottle halfway with distilled water
Add 1–2 teaspoons of witch hazel or alcohol
Add 15–25 drops of essential oils (you can adjust to taste)
Shake well before each use
Label and store somewhere cool, dry, and out of direct sunlight

Sunlight & Citrus
Sweet Orange + Grapefruit + Frankincense
Zesty and light. A favourite for clearing the air after a tidy or refreshing shared space.
Tips for Best Results
Always shake the bottle before each use
Use a dark glass bottle if storing for longer than a week
Add a pinch of salt or use a solubiliser if the oils and water separate too quickly
These blends also make lovely gifts—wrap with twine and a handwritten label
Essential Oil Safety Notes
Check that your oils are pet-safe (some, like tea tree or eucalyptus, aren’t suitable for cats or dogs)
Always do a patch test before spraying on fabric
Store away from heat or direct sunlight to preserve scent and quality

FAQs
1. Can I use tap water instead of distilled? Yes, but distilled or boiled water helps prevent bacterial growth.
2. What’s the point of adding alcohol or witch hazel? It helps the essential oils mix with the water and extends shelf life.
3. How long does a homemade spray last? It usually lasts 1–2 weeks without preservatives. Store it in the fridge to keep it fresher longer.
4. Can I use fragrance oils instead of essential oils? You can, but they’re synthetic and may not carry the same benefits or purity.
5. Are these safe to spray on pillows and linens? Please test a small patch first to ensure they don’t stain.
